Actress Uzo Aduba, TV host Jimmy Fallon and BBC drama Sherlock were among the main winners at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.
The ceremony honours TV guest stars and behind-the-scenes crew.
Fallon won best guest actor in a comedy for hosting Saturday Night Live – one of five awards for the NBC sketch show.
Sherlock picked up four prizes, while Aduba was named best guest actress in a comedy for her role as “Crazy Eyes” in Netflix’s Orange is the new Black.
In an emotional speech, the actress thanked her mother for moving from Nigeria “to make a better life for her family”.
She also thanked the programme’s creators for a show “that lets everyone be represented in such a beautiful way”.
In the drama categories, Joe Morton was named best guest actor for playing Rowan Pope in ABC’s political thriller Scandal, while Allison Janney won best guest actress for her part as Margaret Scully in Showtime’s Masters of Sex.
In her acceptance speech, Janney thanked the show’s producers, co-stars, writers and one particular member of the production team.
“The crew guy who got me a shot of bourbon before my first sex scene was extraordinarily important to me,” she said.
Emmy rules say guest actors are those who have “guest star” billing, or who are contracted as such, regardless of the number of episodes they appear in.
British winners
Saturday Night Live was the night’s biggest winner, taking accolades for directing, make-up, costumes and hair as well as Fallon’s hosting.
It was closely followed by His Last Vow, the final episode of Sherlock’s third series, which won awards for cinematography, music, single-camera picture editing and sound editing.
Game Of Thrones, True Detective and documentary Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey also picked up four trophies each.
Other British winners included actor Jeremy Irons, who was named best narrator for the wildlife documentary Game of Lions; and Downton Abbey, which received a hair styling award.
The ceremony took place a week before the main Primetime Emmys.
