This new instalment isn’t a direct follow-up, but is billed more as a spin-off of sorts. The opening credits even go so far as to announce that Legacy is “based on the television series 24”. Kiefer Sutherland, still on board as an executive producer, is otherwise nowhere to be seen, with his iconic protagonist Jack Bauer replaced with Eric Carter, played by The Walking Dead star Corey Hawkins. Jack is, presumably, having an unpleasant stay in a cage somewhere after handing himself in to some Russian agents at the end of Live Another Day. This attempt at distance from the previous series is probably justifiable. With so much history and continuity to deal with, a fresh start makes it easier to rope in a new audience (who may have been in primary school when the show first aired 16 years ago), while long-time fans might tune in to see how this take on the format fares. An avid watcher of the show over its initial run, I had a fair amount of trepidation about how well this would go.
