Affidavit: Nederland man arrested for assaulting man killed by off-duty cop
A 23-year-old Nederland resident is accused of assaulting Chaz York the same night the Vidor man was shot and killed by an off-duty cop, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Levi Severson, 23, was booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on Wednesday and posted a $2,500 bond 14 minutes later, Jefferson County assistant district attorney Cory Kneeland said.

According to the affidavit, “Severson and York were at Madison’s, located at 4020 Dowlen Rd., when the assault took place.”
The incident happened on Oct. 14, where York was later shot and killed by former Beaumont PD officer Chase Welch. A Jefferson County grand jury declined to indict Welch in a December hearing. Welch resigned from Beaumont PD on Feb. 3.

“Witness stated that Severson, without any provocation, punched York in the face area at least twice with his fist,” the affidavit states. “Severson later admitted to Beaumont P.D. detectives to have punched York in the face with his fist.”
Kneeland confirmed that assault is a Class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by a fine of up to $4,000, up to one year in jail, or both.
