The singer, who is the only vocalist to have won Grammys in the jazz, pop, and R&B categories, was admitted in Los Angeles earlier this month and announced he was retiring from touring, cancelling upcoming tour dates. On Thursday a message to fans on his Facebook page said he was slowly recovering, with his son reporting Jarreau had been singing his hit Moonlighting to the nurses. But he died at 6am Los Angeles time – on the day the music industry will again gather in the city for the Grammy Award . A statement on Jarreau’s Facebook page said: “It is with the deepest of sadness to inform you Al Jarreau passed away this morning, at about 600am LA time. “He was in the hospital, kept comfortable by his wife, son, and a few of his family and friends. A small, private service is planned, for immediate family only. No public service is planned yet this time.” A statement on his website said: “He will be missed. His 2nd priority in life was music. There was no 3rd. His 1st priority, far ahead of the other, was healing or comforting anyone in need.
