News editor for The Voice, Vic Motune, spoke with the late Trayvon Martin’s parents Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton about the legacy their son has inadvertently left behind in part two of the conversation below. Part two of the interview: She (Fulton) said that despite the fears that Trump’s election would have a negative effect on race relations, they remained focused on keeping the issue of gun violence and how it affects black people in the spotlight. “Although the tragedy happened to Trayvon what we’re trying to do is save as many lives as possible,” said Fulton. “We know we cannot save Trayvon, but we can save some of the other Trayvon Martins that are still here. That’s why we are so passionate about what we do and why we are so deliberate about what we said in the book. “We believe that what happened with Trayvon brought attention to the situation. It started a conversation. We even had the president of the United States at the time, Barack Obama, say if he had a son, Trayvon could have looked like him.” Fulton continued: “It got people talking about the issues that Black Lives Matter were campaigning on and what we were saying as parents.
