The Emmy Awards were handed out in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra was the biggest winner with three awards, including best TV movie and a best actor award for Michael Douglas.
Breaking Bad was named best drama, while Modern Family took the comedy award for the fourth time. Here is what some of the stars had to say on the night.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS – Emmys host
“Tonight we celebrate the best of television. For the younger audience, that’s the thing you watch on your phones.”
MICHAEL DOUGLAS – Outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or movie for Behind the Candelabra
To co-star Matt Damon: “This is a two-hander and Matt, you’re only as good as your other hand. You’re magnificent and the only reason I’m standing here is because of you. You really deserve half of this. So do you want the bottom or the top?”
JANE LYNCH – Glee actress pays tribute to co-star Cory Monteith
“Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which so many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction,”
STEVE LEVITRAN – Modern Family co-creator accepting the show’s fourth consecutive best comedy win
“Thanks to all the bullies, the gym teachers who made fun of the way we ran. Without you, we would never have gone into comedy.”
CLAIRE DANES – Outstanding lead actress in a drama series for Homeland
When asked how she stayed out of trouble as a young actress: “I think I was very fortunate to live in a time that not everyone had cameras on [their] cellphones…”I took three years off to go to college. I was an idiot in the privacy of my own dorm room.”
TINA FEY – Outstanding writing for a comedy series for 30 Rock
To writing partner Robert Carlock: “There are not that many people that make me feel lazy and stupid, and you make me feel that way every day.”
JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS – Outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Veep
On where she’s going to put her statue: “I’m going to sleep with it! It means a ton because I’ve lost many more times than I’ve won.”
ANNA GUNN – Best supporting actress in a drama for Breaking Bad
On her character Skyler’s frumpy wardrobe: “I always wondered why Skyler couldn’t use the drug money just once to buy herself a gown.”
On the Breaking Bad finale: “We’ve been trained within an inch of our lives not to reveal anything. And the audience will appreciate it because the last two episodes are so mind-blowing. I think people will be frozen in their chairs staring at the TV after. It’s apocalyptical.”
STEPHEN COLBERT – Outstanding variety series for The Colbert Report
“It’s sort of a cliche to say it’s an honour to be nominated – it’s more than that – it’s a lie. This is way better.”
MERRITT WEVER – Best supporting actress in a comedy for Nurse Jackie
“Thank you so much. Um, I gotta go. Bye.”
